The unjustified advance of the date and the impossibility for many Ministers of Tourism to travel to Madrid, transfers the representation of the member states to their ambassadors in the election of the next Secretary General for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). With UNWTO headquartered in Madrid, Spain, this favors the current Secretary General, since not all countries have a resident ambassador in Spain, so those that are already in Spain start the voting with an unfair heavy lead.
The post-pandemic recovery plans in Latin America have some pillars. Among them the recovery of tourism. This is a global problem due to the air transport crisis. It would be illusory to think that it can be solved with bilateral actions. An important role can be played by the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) founded in 1974 and to which 19 Latin American countries joined from the beginning.

The campaign for the UNWTO election of Secretary General (World Tourism Organization) is currently underway. Unfortunately, discussions linked to controversial procedures that could favor one of the candidates, especially if their aim is to reach a vote as soon as possible notwithstanding the unusual criticism of their predecessors in office over the last twenty years, have been overshadowed by the concrete proposals that differentiate the two candidates, which have not always received due attention outside the specialized press.
One of these proposals that deserves a lot of attention is the one put forward by HE Mai Al Khalifa to establish a Global Assistance Fund for the revival of tourism after the pandemic crisis.

Snowstorms in Madrid, COVID-19 lockdowns in Spain, the “Decency of the UNWTO Election Campaign” by the World Tourism Network signed by two former UNWTO Secretary Generals and hundreds of tourism leaders from more than 100 countries, the fact that some of the voting Ministers of Tourism had already tested positive for COVID-19 – none of this moved the current UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili to reconsider allowing a delay in the upcoming election meeting set to take place in just a few days.
The election for the UNWTO Secretary General term starting in 2022 is on the agenda. The election was moved from May to January by the current UNWTO leadership despite the unsafe travel situation in the world.

Patron Dr. Taleb Rifai has been taking a lead in helping the organization to enter a new phase to move forward.
Tourism leaders including VP Alain St. Ange from Seychelles, head of Commission Dr. Walter Mzembi and many more attended this important first General Assembly.
Ncube and Juergen Steinmetz will get help with three more directors added to the organization to help with an updated structure for ATB. The new directors will report to a second General Assembly to be called on April 2, 2021, to elect a permanent leadership team.
