By Alisha McLennan Communications student A $6000 donation from the Mahu Community Trading Post has kicked off AIM’s fundraising to buy a new vehicle. Warkworth-based AIM (Adults in Motion) provides activities and support for young adults with intellectual disabilities. AIM manager Sarah Allan says their current Nissan Elgrand minivan can no longer accommodate the growing number of members, nor some types of wheelchairs that the members require. “One of our members has had an upgrade on his wheelchair, which is great, but it doesn’t fit in our current van,” she says.

Trading Post shuts down in wake of volunteer burnout Warkworth will miss the Wednesday sales. Mahu Community Trading Post, on the corner of Mill Lane and Whitaker Road, will shut down permanently on June 30. Chairperson John Carr says it was a tough decision to close. “Our team of volunteers has reached burnout point with the volume of work involved in the weekly sales. The increase in operating costs has also contributed to this decision,” he says. The shop, which sells donated secondhand goods, has given away a total of $320,000 to community causes since opening in September 2018. John says there will still be money in the kitty for future applicants when the store closes.

A new 100-metre path planted with 40 native tree species was officially opened at Highfield Garden Reserve in Algies Bay last month. A large carved kauri slab listing all the species planted along the Lily Pond Track was unveiled by Mahu Community Trading Post chair John Carr and Warkworth Community Shop manager Christine Hannah, both of whose organisations donated funding to the project.
