Three Indian Americans Among Five Candidates Planning to Run for Mayor of Edison, New Jersey

The mayoral seat in Edison, New Jersey, is up for grabs, and a handful of people, including three Indian Americans, are seeking the position. Tap into Edison reports that five individuals have expressed interest in screening before the Edison Democratic Organization for mayor. Referencing sources close to EDO, the individuals expressing interest include Councilman Sam Joshi, former Councilwoman and Board of Education member Sapana Shah, and current EDO chair Mahesh Bhagia. Additionally, Councilman Joe Coyle and Councilman and former Edison Board of Education member Richard Brescher have shown interest. The winner of the screening process will receive the endorsement of the EDO and have the organization line, the Tap into Edison report said.

❯ EDISON – Mayor Thomas Lankey and Councilman Robert Diehl have appealed to the New Jersey Attorney General’s office and/or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office to step in and bring those responsible for the racist flier that was distributed by mail during the 2017 Edison Township Public Schools Board of Education election to justice. Lankey and Diehl expressed frustration with the lack of movement in the case at a press conference on March 3. “It is frustrating to have this event that occurred three years ago and to this day not have uncovered and determined who is responsible,” Lankey said. “I applaud our [Township] Council and Committee of the Whole. Without them, honestly, I don’t think we would have gotten to where we are today and we just need to help them bring it over the goal line, to finish.”

He was 64. “This is a tough time for me and my family,” said Middlesex County Commissioner Charles Tomaro, who said he and Barnes were best of friends growing up together; both attended John P. Stevens High School in Edison. “His life will be a lasting memory for the rest of my life.” The pair screened together for Edison Township Council seats with the Edison Democratic Organization (EDO) in 1995. With a difficult road to victory, they pounded the pavement from Memorial Day to election night, knocking on doors and eating pizza from local eateries from Tony’s Pizza and Restaurant to La Rosa’s Pizza every night because Barnes’ love of pizza, Tomaro said.
