MUMBAI: University and college campuses in the state can reopen physically for students from February 15, after a 10-month-long break. The state’s higher and technical education minister Uday Samant announced that colleges can start classes with 50% attendance on a rotation basis. Classes and examinations will be conducted both online and offline and attendance will be voluntary, he said. Mumbai University will take a call on the matter soon and issue its circular after deliberating with local authorities, report Sujit Mahamulkar and Yogita Rao.
Samant said universities can come out with their own SOPs, adding the mandatory 75% attendance rule will be relaxed and students will not be debarred from exams.

MUMBAI: A revolution is quietly brewing in the patriarchal Marathwada region of Maharashtra, and women such as Sumanbai Nurude (55) are scripting it.
Nurude, who was widowed 30 years ago and sent back to her parents’ village with her two daughters, contested the gram panchayat elections from her Bhaswadi village in Nanded district and, to her surprise, won.
“I was surprised when I was declared winner. It is hard for a single woman to come so far. But now that I have got the opportunity, I will work to raise the issues of women and focus on helping more single women,” said Nurude, adding that her daughters and brother have been her pillars of support.

In the three days of vaccination since January 16, a total of 51,650 health workers have been vaccinated
MUMBAI: The third day of Covid-19 vaccination on Wednesday saw an impressive surge in the number of recipients in the state 68% as compared to 52% the previous day mainly due to “walk-in” access to pre-registered healthcare workers, senior government officials-cum-doctors stepping in as ‘motivators’ to take the vaccine and an enthusiastic turnout in the rural areas.
State health officials said that 18,166 recipients about 68% of the healthcare workers scheduled for vaccination on Wednesday had taken the shot, report Sumitra Deb Roy, Malathy Iyer & Bhavika Jain.
The turnout in Mumbai, once India’s worst Covid hotspot, was 52%.
