The Centre’s move to ban onion export till March to ensure adequate stock and curb rising prices has triggered strong reactions in Maharashtra where farmers and traders have taken to the streets in protest.
Pune’s market unlike that of Nashik or Lasalgaon is a tertiary market; ie, it feeds directly to urban consumer and thus other than farmers even traders from Satara, Ahmednagar or even Karnataka brings their produce to be sold here.
The decision comes following massive unrest among onion cultivators in Maharashtra after the Centre imposed a 40% export duty on onions to check the rise in prices.
Shinde also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah and Piyush Goyal for providing relief to onion producers by purchasing the 2 LMT of onion.
