WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - Three schools in Wilmington were honored by the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday.
According to a press release, D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy and Wrightsville Beach Elementary School were both named Green Ribbon Schools while UNC-Wilmington was recognized as a Postsecondary Sustainability Awardee.
These honors were part of the Education Departmentâs Green Ribbon Schools program, which recognizes schools, districts, and colleges/universities for âtheir innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.â

But when school buildings shuttered their doors in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, many Jehovah’s Witness families turned the challenges of remote learning into an opportunity to expand their children’s education through spiritual activities.
“The pandemic upended our entire educational system,” said Greta Hawkins, principal of P.S. 90 The Magnet School for Environmental Studies and Community Wellness in Brooklyn, New York. “Parents must realize that now more than ever they need to take a proactive interest in their child’s education.”
