Former Lib Dem Cllr Maggie Parker says she felt harassed in party

A former Liberal Democrat councillor who left to become an Independent says she felt “harassed” and she had “no choice” but to quit. Cllr Maggie Parker’s resignation from Watford Borough Council’s Lib Dem group in March was the third in a matter of weeks, with colleague Cllr Keith Crout also quitting over allegations of the “conduct” of the Watford Liberal Democrat group and Cllr Jane Johnson – who left the council altogether - claiming there’s an “unhealthy influence” from outside the group. But Cllr Parker has not been prepared to give up the Oxhey seat she has held for four years, where she currently lives, and has formed her own Independent group with Stanborough representative Cllr Crout.

Sir Ed Davey launches Lib Dem party campaign in Watford

Sir Ed Davey speaking with the mayor of Watford in Bar Bodega Speaking from Bar Bodega in The Parade in Watford town centre, Sir Ed was asked whether he believed the raft of changes of councillors within the Watford Lib Dems would have a detrimental effect on his party’s vote in the town. He responded: We’ve got very strong leadership with Peter. He’s put together a strong team and they’ve proven what they can do. They work hard and they get things done whether it’s for young people or the environment. Local parties are like a family who occasionally have the odd squabble but it’s very minor. The actual work of the council is totally unaffected and during this pandemic, they’ve worked with local people and businesses and they’ve got a great record.

If we had been padding along unsteadily, looking for footing like any ambitious toddler, our balance was entirely shaken by the seismic developments of 2020: the lockdowns and masks, the bizarrely mysterious and gravely dangerous virus, a summer of protests and the retaliatory federal response we felt in the rattling of our windows, a democracy and an election so fragile that some sounded alarms of an impending coup.
