In the COVID-19 unit at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, every day is what nurse Deena Smith describes as “go, go, go constantly.”
As Michigan endures a coronavirus surge that outpaces any other state, medical staff are on their third round of being overwhelmed.
“I do feel like it’s been a little bit more hectic this time, just because it seems like we just have more people with this wave that are sicker,” Smith said. “It can also be that, you know, this is going into the third time that we’ve done this and we are exhausted, we are beat down.”

McLaren Thumb Region and Caro Region hospitals have updated their visitor restrictions thanks to the recent reduction of COVID-19 cases in the Upper Thumb region and across the state.
The new restrictions for visitors coming into McLaren include:
• Each inpatient and emergency room patient may have one healthy adult visitor
• Pediatric patients may have up to two healthy adult visitors, either parents or legal guardians.
• Obstetrical patients may have up to two support persons.
• Patients being evaluated for or on hospice care or nearing the end of life may have two visitors.

BAY CITY, MI - The simple act of drawing with sidewalk chalk is brightening the day for patients and staff at McLaren Bay Region hospital in Bay City.
Edward Pedley of Holly said he looked out of his hospital room during his recent stay as a non-COVID patient and was greeted with a cheery message of “We wish you well,” written in sidewalk chalk, accompanied by some hand-drawn hearts on the sidewalk running along Columbus Avenue.
