Martin Stephen thanks Dunbar RNLI Lifeboat crew who saved his life 50 years ago

Photo: Martin Stephen A MAN saved from drowning off Dunbar has thanked the local RNLI lifeboat crew – and one volunteer in particular – for pulling him from the water in a force 10 gale 50 years ago. Martin Stephen (pictured below), now 71, owes his life to the courage of David Brunton who, despite not being a strong swimmer, jumped into the treacherous swell as Martin sank unconscious beneath the waves. Martin Stephen Martin said: “I had been face down in the water for several minutes and was told later that Mr Brunton dived in fully clothed as I started to sink.”

Martin Stephen, then aged 21, almost died when he jumped into the sea to try and rescue his cousin David Jeffrey, 11, who had been swept off the rocks at the entrance to Dunbar harbour on December 23, 1970.
