In keeping with mayor Nyaniso Nelani’s dream of turning Mthatha into another Kigali, the King Sabata Dalindyebo (KSD) municipality is buying 100 additional dustbins for the Eastern Cape town. Though many Mthatha streets already have dustbins, residents and businesses have called for more to keep the town centre clean.
Ruthless criminals in Mthatha are sabotaging crucial infrastructure meant to ensure a steady supply of electricity to the town’s citizens. King Sabata Dalindyebo municipal bosses have expressed dismay over a flurry of reports and video footage in which people are seen burning electricity infrastructure in the area.
Several of Mthatha’s many rundown buildings, which residents say have become eyesores, among them historic hotels andthe Munitata building which houses municipal offices, are getting a major facelift.This was revealed by King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality mayor Nyaniso Nelani recently.
King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality mayor Nyaniso Nelani’s big dreams of turning his municipality into a metro in two years’ time have come crashing down.This after a proposal to incorporate another town and several municipal wards from two other local municipalities into KSD to form a category A municipality failed to convince the Municipal Demarcation Board.
In what will be a welcome relief for many residents in the eastern parts of the province, OR Tambo district municipality bosses will soon be able to generate electricity to ease load-shedding and water-shortage challenges, especially in Mthatha.In 2003, the Mthatha-based district authority was appointed by the national government to provide clean water to residents of the KSD, Mhlontlo, Port St Johns, Ingquza Hill and Nyandeni local municipalities.
