Right sweeps Madrid, left must rethink - International Viewpoint - online socialist magazine

Spanish state Saturday 8 May 2021, by Raul Camargo The Partido Popular (PP) led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso, one of the leaders of the party’s right wing, easily won the elections held on 4 May 2021 in the Community of Madrid. The party now has 65 deputies as opposed to 30 previously and will be able to rule the region alone with support when needed from the far right Vox party. It was a bad day for all left-wing people, who have suffered from the corruption and Trumpism of this radical right. Its infamous management of the pandemic worked to its benefit because it linked the open-door policy of hospitality and other activities with the concept of freedom. This allowed it to regroup much of the right-wing electorate but also mobilize traditional, low-politicized abstentionists.

Resounding win for Spain s conservative PP in regional elections

3 minutes read (Updates with rewrite, additional information) Madrid, May 4 (EFE).- Spain’s conservative Popular Party (PP), which has governed the Community of Madrid since 1995, strengthened its grip on power in regional elections on Tuesday, winning 65 seats, more than double the number it secured in the 2019 elections and just four fewer than an absolute majority of 69. Meanwhile, with 99 percent of the ballots counted, the Socialist Party (PSOE), the winner of the 2019 elections, lost 13 seats and will now have 24, tied with another leftist group, Mas Madrid, which exceeded the PSOE in numbers of actual votes. The voting was held after a tough election campaign in which significant polarization was seen between the right and the left political blocs.
