Renowned oncologist and chairperson of the Cancer Institute, Dr V Shanta, who is noted for her outstanding contribution to cancer care died early on Tuesday. She was 93.
Sources at the Cancer Institute said Dr Shanta was rushed to hospital after she complained of chest pain last night at about 9 p.m.
She had a massive block that could not be removed. Her end came at about 3.55 a.m., said a senior oncologist at the institute. Her body was moved to the old Cancer Institute premises, which she helped to build.

In Dr V Shanta’s death, the nation has lost one of its greatest icons. Her towering and compassionate presence at the Adyar Cancer Research Centre in Chennai healed people’s hearts for decades. That mattered more than them battling the dreaded disease called cancer, for which they came to her hoping for a miracle cure.

Chennai, Jan 19 : Veteran oncologist V. Shanta who headed the Cancer Institute (WIA) here, popularly known as Adyar Cancer Institute died at a private hospital on Tuesday early morning.
A Padma Vibuhshan, Padma Bhushan, Padama Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Shanta, 93 was admitted to a private hospital on Monday night as she was unwell.
Her end came on Tuesday early morning.
Expressing shock at Shanta s death, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said with her dedicated service she expanded and moderninsed the hospital that was started with 12 beds.
CHENNAI: Padma Vibhushan Dr V Shanta, Chairperson, Cancer Institute (WIA) Adyar died on Monday, hospital sources said.
The senior oncologist is said to have suffered a massive heart attack on Monday night. Official sources in the hospital said that Dr Shanta complained of mild discomfort on Monday evening. She was rushed to Apollo Hospital after she developed breathing difficulty. But the treatment didn t help, and she passed away at 3.35 am, the source said.
She is renowned for her service in the field of cancer care.
Her body has been moved to the old building cancer Institute in Gandhi Nagar. Dr Shanta will be laid to rest in Besant Nagar at 4.30 pm.
