Lynchburg was named for its founder, john lynch. It had a rich manufacturing history as well as civil war ties to the nearby sandusky and the nearby Appomattox Courthouse. There is damage to the painting and the tradition passed to the family is that this painting was fanned allies by Union Soldiers during their occupation at the civil war battle.
