ANDERSON Robert Stafford could barely talk through his tears as he spoke about his 19-year-old grandson’s death Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Douglas-Sides Stafford was found unresponsive in a single-person cell by jail staff at 5:26 a.m. Tuesday, according to an email from Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger.
“Staff immediately began CPR and called for an ambulance,” Mellinger said.
Robert Douglas-Sides Stafford was declared dead at Community Hospital Anderson a short time later.
Robert Stafford said he was unaware his grandson was even in jail. He said he was notified of his grandson’s death by the teen’s other grandfather.

ANDERSON An Anderson man, accused of stabbing a man in a Lapel bar, turned himself into authorities overnight, according to Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger.
Christopher Michael Smith, 34, is charged with Level 2 felony robbery resulting in serious bodily injury and Level 3 felony aggravated battery. A warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest on April 15.
According to authorities, Smith and Matthew Pope, 46, also of Anderson, are accused of stabbing Steven Henderson around 1:30 a.m. on April 1 at Woody’s Bar in Lapel.
Pope has been in custody on the same charges as Smith since April 27. He is being held on a $35,000 full cash bond.
