Abby Moloughney had the game on her stick as the clock dwindled down in the third period. With 36 seconds left, Moloughney grabbed the puck mid-air in a controversial hand-pass call that left Syracuse in its own zone with one final break to find an equalizer.
Lauren Bellefontaine won the faceoff, and Syracuse moved the puck into the neutral zone. Mae Batherson took the puck and carried it up the left wing. With 20 seconds left, Jessica DiGirolamo followed the puck behind the net and fed it across Raygan Kirk in goal. In an attempt to freeze the puck, Kirk lied flat in the crease, leaving the net wide open. The loose puck trickled across to Moloughney, who set it up on her forehand, shot and missed the open frame.

When three minutes remained in the first period, the Nittany Lions were a minute away from killing Syracuse’s second power play. Madison Beishuizen collected the puck at center ice, pivoted left and fired a shot on goal. The puck collided off sophomore Mallory Uihlein’s skate and flew into the air.
Penn State’s goalie Josie Bothun committed to her right, exposing the left side of the goal. After noticing the redirected puck, Bothun planted her right leg in the corner, dove left and outstretched her glove. But the length of her 5-foot-6 frame wasn’t enough. Syracuse was on the board 1-0 against the No. 1-seeded team, Penn State.

Freshman Tatum White gathered the puck at mid-ice from Madison Beishuizen. Allison Small had just halted a Penn State possession after blocking a shot from her right side. White was now in a two-on-two breakaway with fellow forward Abby Moloughney and two Nittany Lion defenders.
White passed to Moloughney, who corralled the puck in after a Penn State defender blocked the pass. The junior fired a shot toward the goal, but freshman goaltender Josie Bothun bodied the puck out of harm’s way.
