Were honored to have with us today two members of the board of directors of the White House Historical association, the honorable ann stock and mr. Nide kiplinger. Were also honored to have with us mr. William alman whos the curator of the white house. This commemorates the bicentennial of one of americas most critical yet overlooked conflicts. With the gathering of these extraordinary scholars and experts in the history field, the next two days are sure to educate, inspire and enhance our understanding of the war of 1812. Indeed less dangerous to their interests. The continental system, not this continent but the european continent, was beginning to destroy the economies of other european states. Napoleon protected france from the economic war by asset stripping all of the conquered territories. First country to rebel would be russia, napoleons only serious ally, and a Major Trading nation with a big export trade geared towards supplying the british market. Inside the continental system from 1807 to 1811 russia saw their economy collapse. Being part of napoleons team was very bad for your business. In 1811 the czar of russia, alexander, realized that if he carried on like this his country would be bankrupt and he would follow his father to an early grave. The last time russia had made war on brittain the czar was murdered and they changed the government. Basically most of the landowners in russia relied on selling goods to the british to pay their bills. So the czar decided that bankruptcy and debt was
Accounts are not necessarily the most accurate thing in the world. But if these had been supported by other information, primary documents, id be more likely to believe that they also burned but i cant find any of that. I just want to remind you that the americans were very upset about what was going on and when they talked about what had happened to washington, they tend to embellish the true facts. And then if you go down below, these were the things that were burnt after the evening of august 24th. So a better way to look at all of this is to compare what was actually burned on the evening of august the 24th. During that night. And you can see theres a very, very big difference there. And when we talk about the british burning washington, were leaving the average citizen with this impression that the british came in and they burnt the entire city of washington, d. C. And if you look at this, you can see that the americans burnt a heck of a lot in the city, but you dont hear anybody

Peace negotiations got under way in europe with madisons full support. He needed Albert Galatin as his linchpin on the negotiating team in gent. British ships had appeared at the mouth of the potomac as early as july 1813, and raids along the chesapeake caused a Nervous Congress to look less favorably on an Internal Revenue solution. The fiery decimation of the white house, the capital, you know, august 1814 only intensified the need to reorder republican priorities and accommodate president madisons turnabout in favoring tax increases and a National Bank that secured a uniform currency and maintained peoples confidence in government during peace time as well as war. He had quietly succeeded in rendering hamiltons purportedly unconstitutional bank safe. A bank compromised of private merchants and stock jobing speculat speculators. This was no longer

Donald hickey is a professor of history at wans State College in nebraska. He was called the dean of 1812 scholarship by the new yorker, hes written seven books on the conflict. Most notably, the war of 1812, a forgotten conflict, available in a bicentennial edition. His book on Andrew Jackson and the battle of new orleans is forthcoming from Johns Hopkins university press.
