New World Bank Support to Enable Equitable Access to COVID-19 Vaccines in Senegal

WASHINGTON, June 2, 2021 The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors approved $134 million (half of the funds in grants), from the International Development Association (IDA) to enable safe, affordable, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, and ensure effective vaccine deployment in Senegal. The Senegal COVID-19 Response Project will help further strengthen the vaccination system and national systems for public health preparedness.
According to Mr. Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, Senegalese Minister of Health and Social Action, “this additional funding of $135 million will support the Government of Senegal s efforts to procure vaccines to improve availability and increase geographic accessibility to populations. We welcome the World Bank s response to the request for additional resources to further support the COVID-19 response.”

NOUAKCHOTT, February 26, 2021 - Following recent media reports on the demonstrations in the Koylal plain in southern Mauritania, the World Bank expresses concerns about the land issues raised by the protestors and the implications of the rehabilitation of 25ha to benefit the Ibn Khaldoum cooperative in the village of Ferallah under the Sahel Irrigation Initiative project. A World Bank mission will be deployed in the coming days to gather the necessary information from all concerned parties in the community. The World Bank will take this information into account in its dialogue with the Mauritanian government.

WASHINGTON, February 11, 2021 The World Bank approved today an additional financing of $5 million from the International Development Association (IDA) to provide the small island nation of Cabo Verde with affordable and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. This is the first World Bank-financed operation in Africa to support a country’s COVID-19 immunization plan and help with the purchase and distribution of vaccine in alignment with the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) Facility.
