“It isn’t only an issue of fairness or even of affordability,” said Grace Leavitt, president of the Maine Education Association. “Having access to menstrual products can help to positively impact a girl’s confidence and thus even affect her future.”
Advocates told the Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs that many youngsters struggle to pay for sanitary products such as tampons and pads. As many as one in four have missed classes as a result, they said.
But for many of those testifying, it’s also an issue of equity.
“Half of the population get their period, and so we should at least be able to supply items to help them,” said 11-year-old Astrid Whitton, a South Portland sixth grader.

Earlier this month, a three-year-old College Station child, Adeline Welch, was driven to Oklahoma by a family member who did not have full custody of her. College Station Police considered the case an abduction with high risk of injury or death.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - Police say the child who was the subject of an Amber Alert today has been found.
Adeline Paige Welch, 3, was last seen on March 3 around 10:30 p.m., in College Station. She was found in Oklahoma Thursday night. College Station police say she is being evaluated by doctors to be sure she is safe. Her mother, who does not have full custody of her, left behind the childâs medicine and medical equipment she needs daily.
