NEW BRITAIN – This is a community that takes care of its own.
As snowflakes fell in downtown New Britain Sunday, the Daughters of Anna Warmsley Temple #1073 gathered outside the Pride of Conn Elks Lodge 1437 I.B.P.O.E. on Elm Street to pack up Daughter Ruler Pam Marshall-Davis’ vehicle with gifts and goods.
On Monday Marshall-Davis plans on dropping off dozens and dozens of donations at the Prudence Crandall Center, which serves women and children affected by domestic violence.
“I have to do what I have to do as a leader to make sure we give back to the community,” she explained. “People are suffering right now. There’s not much we can do about this pandemic but we can make sure we do something to bring a smile to their faces.”
Cambridge middle school students are trying to make local seniors feel seen this December, by crafting ornaments for them.
Seventh and eighth-grade students at Koshkonong Trails, a project-based charter school, made over 500 ornaments for residents of senior living centers in six area communities.
Koshkonong Trails teacher Raquel Parish said that students made three types of winter ornaments and a video of themselves singing âJingle Bellsââ over Google Meet. The project began in October. The students contacted senior living facilities in Cambridge, Milton, Edgerton, Stoughton, Fort Atkinson and Johnson Creek, and teachers delivered ornaments on Dec. 11.
Parish said the goal was to build intergenerational community while the coronavirus pandemic continues to keep people physically apart.
