Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, they ve seen friends, relatives and community members be harassed, threatened and violently assaulted.
Congress is now on track to pass legislation that would denounce discrimination against Asian Americans and expedite reviews of potential Covid-19-related hate crimes.
But some Asian Americans haven t waited for lawmakers to act, countering hate and racism against their communities in ways big and small.

With violence against Asian New Yorkers on the rise, Madeline Park decided to offer to pay for people s cab rides if they don t feel safe taking the subway. Her gesture snowballed with the generosity of strangers.
NEW YORK - With every attack targeting New Yorkers of Asian descent, one s fear for one s safety in public grows. Such has been the case for Brooklyn resident Madeline Park for whom the simple act of taking the subway has become complicated. I didn t realize I would feel so fearful on the train, Park said of a recent ride in the subway. Every minute of it, I was hyper-vigilant, looking at everybody, and sort of expecting someone to come up to attack me or harass me.
