Tauranga’s Sam Tanner has been selected to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.
The ex-Bethlehem College student broke the University of Washington collegiate record in the 1500 meter race in February, running the race in a time of 3:34 seconds, qualifying him for the Tokyo Olympics.
Fifteen athletes have been conditionally named in the athletics team for the Tokyo Olympic Games, announced yesterday at the AUT Millennium track by the New Zealand Olympic Committee - NZOC.
The team is made up of an exciting mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with Olympic medallists Dame Valerie Adams, Tom Walsh and Nick Willis joined by the likes of Connor Bell, Maddison-Lee Wesche, and Sam Tanner – all three of whom are aged 21 or under.

The 15-strong team is led by perennial Olympians Dame Valerie Adams in the shot put and 1500 metre runner Nick Willis.
Maddison-Lee Wesche , Jacko Gill and Tom Walsh join Adams as the other shot putters included.
Discus competitor Connor Bell, hammer throwers Julia Ratcliffe and Lauren Bruce, and javelin thrower Tori Peeters round out the heaving community.
High jumper Hamish Kerr, runners Sam Tanner, Camille Buscomb, Zane Robertson and Malcolm Hicks, and race walker Quentin Rew are also included.

There was no messing with Dame Valerie Adams on the day she was named to take part in her fifth Olympic Games.
You know Dame Valerie Adams is in a good headspace around her historic fifth Olympic Games selection for Tokyo because of the merciless ribbing she dishes out to the pair of male reporters unlucky enough to catch her near the end of Friday’s media session at Auckland’s Millennium training facility. Dame Valerie was very much the headline act at the announcement of a 15-strong athletics team for Tokyo as she in all likelihood brings the curtain down on one of the great New Zealand sporting careers at the age of 36, and mother to daughter Kimoana and son Kepaleli.
