Henry W. Rosenberg: Israel is not a ‘settler colonial state’

In her recent letter to the editor, Maddie Raymond calls on her fellow Jews to “stand in solidarity with the Palestinians in their struggle.”
I agree with her that Palestinians, like all people, deserve the right to self-determination. Military occupation is neither acceptable nor tolerable. I have passed through Israeli checkpoints on the West Bank in the company of my Israeli cousin and in the company of a Palestinian-American friend; the two experiences were impressively distinct.
The late Arthur Hertzberg, a prominent scholar of the history of Zionism, called for the establishment of a Palestinian state, because Palestinians deserve a state for all the same reasons that Israelis do.

In the past weeks, you’ve probably heard about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. The topics I write about are usually more homegrown. But make no mistake, the United States has a hand in the devastation that is happening in Gaza right now.

As usual, our nation has sided with the oppressor. Now is the time where I call you all to action and say to put your foot down and denounce the oppression the U.S. is taking part in.
But as a Jewish person, I understand that denouncing Israel might be a little tougher. Like many of my fellow Jews, I was taught from a young age that Israel was my homeland; that it was my birthright to live there if I chose. I have since learned that it’s a settler colonial state built on the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinian population that has just as much of a right to live there.

Dual Melbourne Cup Carnival winner True Self ran the race of her life to secure black type at Group 1 level as several horses with an Australian affiliation were in action at the Curragh on Sunday.
The winner of the G3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2600m) at Flemington the past two years ran third behind Helvic Dream ($9) and Broome ($1.90 favourite) in the €300,000 (A$472,000) Tattersalls Gold Cup (2100m).
The Willie Mullins-trained True Self ($26), ridden by Hollie Doyle, was the outsider of the field with the race held on her non-preferred Heavy ground.
Doyle bided her time at the rear of the field and upon straightening True Self was travelling so boldly it was apparent the eight-year-old mare would play a role in the finish, closing admirably to finish just over a length from Helvic Dream, who edged out Broome by a short head.
