There were no people in the building.
Firefighters arrived at 3:56 p.m. and entered the building to control the flames, using tanker vehicles to shuttle water from a nearby fill site and pumping it up a long laneway to the building. However, the fire spread to the attic. Firefighters evacuated the building at 4:40 p.m. after the roof started to collapse. There were no injuries.
As of 6:30 p.m, firefighters were still working to douse the blaze from outside the building.
