A police officer is hospitalized after being shot three times in Brooklyn while responding to a shooting late Wednesday night. This comes as shootings are on the rise across the city.
The incident unfolded at 11:11 p.m. after ShotSpotter, the NYPD s technology that detects gunfire, was activated near the intersection of Madison Street and Broadway near the Bushwick/Stuyvesant Heights border, according to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea at a news briefing early Thursday morning. Two uniformed officers and a sergeant in an unmarked car were headed to the scene when they found a bleeding man as he was walking on Macon Street and Howard Avenue, several blocks from the incident.

An NYPD officer was shot three times after approaching a gun wielding man who minutes earlier was involved in a nearby fatal shooting and crash in Brooklyn Wednesday night.
The officer, 28-year-old Brian McGurran, a four-year veteran of the NYPD assigned to the 81st Precinct, was struck in the rear of his bulletproof vest as well as in his leg and buttocks near Macon Street and Howard Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant.
McGurran fired nine shots in return, and another officer fired a dozen rounds, striking the 26-year-old suspect in the leg.
McGurran was rushed in stable condition to Kings County Hospital, where he was released Thursday to cheers and applause from his brothers and sisters in blue.

NEW YORK A uniformed NYPD police officer was shot three times including once in the body armor while responding to a report of gunfire in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, sources said.
The officer, who is expected to survive, and his partner were near Macon Street and Howard Avenue in Bushwick for a ShotSpotter alert when they encountered a suspect who fit the description of the shooter at about 11:15 p.m., police sources said.
When officers told the suspect to stop, he turned around and opened fire, Fox News reported. As a result, one officer was hit in three locations; the back portion of the bulletproof vest, the buttocks and the back of the leg, sources said.
