Pull your gaze away from the handsome Portland midcentury modern house and look up: Plants are growing on the roof.
The reimagined dwelling was one of the first in the city to install vegetation on top of a waterproof layer as an ecoroof to improve air, water and the planet.
Roof gardens reduce stormwater runoff, pollution and erosion, which helps preserve fish habitat.
The urban greenspaces also make life better for birds and insects, according to Portland’s Environmental Services.
