“The consumption of tobacco and alcohol places a significant burden on global health, accounting for 9 million deaths annually,” researchers Sam Trowsdale, Mackay Price, Chris Wilkins, Ben Tscharke, Jochen Mueller and Tom Baker said. “The misuse of tobacco and alcohol also comes with financial burdens. In New Zealand alone, these were estimated at $9 billion each in 2006.”

Alcohol consumption was most prominent in Bay of Plenty’s most urban wastewater site (file photo). For the study, wastewater samples were taken on seven consecutive days during the same week as the national census in 2018. The wastewater testing showed nicotine consumption was “significantly higher” in the Bay of Plenty and Canterbury sites than central Auckland.
