A Whitsunday man choked and assaulted his former partner after arriving home to what he claimed he believed was a home invasion.
Minimal details were read aloud during a short sentencing hearing in Mackay District Court.
The victim had arrived at Jarred Leith George Gillieâs home claiming she was returning a shifting spanner â a story Judge Julie Dick did not buy.
âThereâs a background to it, itâs not just straight up gratuitous violence that you sometimes see in these cases,â Judge Dick said, indicating she did not believe the victim had been there to return the tool.

Subscriber only Snapchat photos have led police to uncover a father s violent choking and beating of his partner in a Mackay home. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced the Mackay District Court on Friday charged with unlawful choking or strangulation and assault causing bodily harm. Crown prosecutor Tiffany Lawrence said an argument provoked the 31-year-old man to grab his partner, whom he shared a child with, around the neck. Ms Lawrence said she tried to walk away but was pursued and choked again in an attempt to stop her actions attracting the police to their address where he was not supposed to because of a domestic violence order.

It was a desperate cry for help after enduring a prolonged, vicious beating from her partner, the father of their children aged two and four, who also witnessed the attack. The 31-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faced Mackay District Court on Friday on domestic violence related charges. These included two counts of common assault and one count each of choking and assault causing bodily harm. Crown prosecutor Tiffany Lawrence said the attack began in the lounge room at their Ooralea home on April 15, 2020.
