Mackay athletes smashed the medal tally at the annual Bowen Carnival, walking away with 80 golds and a swag of personal bests.
Mackay Athletics Club president James Grech said the sugar city fielded the second largest team going into the competition, and came home at the top of the medal count with 149 overall.
Members also achieved 57 personal bests with Mackay dominating the 800m and 1500m track races.
“There were lots of placegetters and it is all about achieving your personal bests and if you can get a first, second or this, that’s a bonus,” Grech said.

One excels on the track and the other in the field; each providing a benchmark and motivation for the other. In just their first year of athletics, the nine-year-old Northview State School students quickly showed they have an aptitude for the sport. Hailing from a hip-hop and touch football background, Billy-Anne and Lexie combined for 29 and 21 personal best times respectively in just under half a season at NMLA. Billy-Anne s tally topped all junior girls at the club, crowning her the Most Improved Female Athlete of the Year.
