Women across the region are recognizing International Women’s Day on Monday a bit differently this year, including in Red Lake and Ear Falls.
“New Starts in Red Lake has hosted an International Women’s Day luncheon for the past 15 years in Red Lake and Ear Falls, but this year we’ve had to make some changes because of COVID precautions, ” explains Executive Director, Jennifer Chamberlin of New Starts for Women.
“On Monday in Red Lake we’re hosting a walk through lunch, we have a 142 women registered and in Ear Falls we’ll be delivering lunch to 30 women at home or at their workplace. Registration was very successful and sadly we’ve had to turn away some sign ups over the past few days.”

Area businesses can now access new tools and supports through Patricia Area Community Endeavours.
With COVID-19 throwing extra challenges towards businesses, PACE has launched three new programs that aim to help businesses thrive now and remain successful afterwards.
Program Coordinator Jeremy Dutton talks about the Remote Access Technology program.
“It’s meant to help small business adapt their business in new innovative ways, including funding to help adopt any relevant technology. That can be anything to help with remote work, an app that allows them to access their files when their away from their computer, anything to help with automation, social media marketing or anything to help entrepreneurs focus on their core business.”

Redding has its share of sprawling, bucolic properties, although none in the center of town equaling the 26.3 acres of Orchard Hill Farm.
This one, at 18 Lonetown Road, is very close to the Redding Green “but no one knows it’s there. It’s on a private lane set back from the road; a tranquil property,” said Michael McKee, the listing agent. “You don’t have to go all the way to Litchfield County to be in the country. Redding is a much easier commute from Manhattan (only 56 miles away),” he said.

The Northwestern Health Unit and local partners are preparing to launch regional COVID-19 vaccine clinics.
As the vaccine supply starts to increase, the health unit expects to start appointment-based clinics for residents over 80 years old in early April.
“About 40 percent of local health units were started later with getting their vaccines and so we’re one of them,” explains Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon. “The reasons were because they prioritized other areas with higher incidence rates, so the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has had a higher incidence rate for a long period of time.”
The Northwestern Health Unit is reporting three new cases of COVID-19 within their catchment area.
They say that there is one from each of the Kenora, Dryden/Red Lake and Sioux Lookout regions.
All of the new cases seem to be as a result of travel.
“A lot of what’s happening is that there’s exposure to a higher risk area, so there’s some type of travel or someone whos traveled from a higher risk area,” explains Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon.” This has led to a bit of spread locally and because of households interacting, there’s a cluster of individuals.”
