Surat city police are enhancing the use of 1,500 cameras to catch traffic violators and smoothen vehicle flow, aiming to improve road safety and traffic flow in the Diamond City. Police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut has initiated several measures to address the worsening traffic situation, including fixing non-functional signals and implementing advanced CCTV technology at key junctions.
The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) solved seven cases of passengers being looted in an autorickshaw by arresting five people including three women. Police recovered valuables worth Rs 2.15 lakh including gold and mobiles. Four cases of Adajan, one case each from Rander, Dindoli and Singanpor were cracked following the arrest. Police have also seized fake number plates which they used to avoid identification of the rickshaw. The gang members targeted single old-age women, threatened or scared the victims, and looted valuables. The gang confessed to committing crimes in various areas between Nov 2023 and Apr 24. The main accused has multiple crimes registered against him in Surat and Bharuch. One of the accused was wanted in a theft case registered with Athwalines police in 2023. Police found they made radium stickers of number plates at a specific location.
