Six previously reported cases have now recovered. The number of active cases in New Zealand is now 48. There are also four new historical cases to report – all of whom are also in managed isolation facilities. A previously reported case, from 11 July, has now been reclassified as a historical case. All five historical cases are included in our confirmed case tally.

Ship with 16 Covid-infected mariners now expected to dock in Christchurch on Sunday

The ministry said the risk to the public was low. The Spanish-flagged ship was not fishing in New Zealand waters and was initially heading to Taranaki to change crews. The current crew had Covid tests on Tuesday after 15 reported recent flu-like symptoms. Health officials said after discovering the virus had spread quickly through the foreign ship, “we felt it was the best course of action to take to offer managed isolation and quarantine [spots]”.
