Michael Jayston, who has died aged 88, was one of Britain’s best stiff-upper-lipped actors, usually cast as steely characters in somewhat dour roles; with his well-groomed hair, sparkling green eyes, soft and seductive, accent-less voice and youthful features, he was a long-time heart-throb, beginning with the hit 1960s ITV series, The Power Game, in which he portrayed the ambitious Lincoln Dowling, boyfriend of the boss’s wife.
