Near the UBC campus, the Fraser parking lot at Pacific Spirit Regional Park will see its pay parking fees increase from $2 per hour to $2.50 per hour.
The regional district also considered implementing pay parking based on a reservation system for the Centennial Beach parking lots at Boundary Bay Regional Park, with fees of $5.00 per half-day and $10.00 per day, but there are no plans to introduce any pay parking at this location in 2021.
In an email to Daily Hive Urbanized, the regional district’s parks department states these transportation demand management measures are necessary due to the unprecedented demand and traffic issues experienced this year as a result of COVID-19, with visitation to regional parks increasing by 43% in the spring and summer compared to 2019.
