Letters to the ed: Do we need crocs in the Brisbane River?

If it wasn’t scary it would be funny. A 4 meter croc seen off the main beach at Yeppoon. Man taken from his boat in the Hinchinbrook Island region. Croc steals fisherman’s catch off the beach at Cardwell and the list goes on. All that the parks service states that unless the animal poses an immediate threat, it’s fine. So we will see more and more people taken – such as the person in the Hinchinbrook region? So unless we see one in the Brisbane river the powers that be will never understand the threat they pose. Recently a pig hunter lost one of his dogs to a croc, the nearest water was four kilometres away.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Rally around female veterans

International Women’s Day This International Women’s Day (March 8), Mates4Mates is encouraging people to get involved and support the female veteran community. This year, the theme is Choose to Challenge, providing an opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and take action to change the world for the better. We know that veteran issues are often seen as a male-centric issue, but it’s important that female veterans impacted by service feel seen and heard. We want them to know that there is support available for them too. Nearly one third of all those reaching out for support at Mates4Mates are women – many who are veterans.

LETTERS: Dairy industry grasping at seaweed

Grasping at seaweed The dairy industry, drowning under public scrutiny of its woeful animal welfare record and environmental destructiveness, is no longer clutching at straws, but instead is grasping seaweed. There are advertorials running about the wonders of feeding cows red algae, or Asparagopsis, in order to reduce the obscene amount of the very potent greenhouse gas methane, which is released in their belches and farts. The no doubt conservative estimate is that this makes up 57 per cent of farm emissions. It is being said that If 10 per cent of the livestock producers added 1.0 per cent of Asparagopsis Seaweed Meal to the daily feed intake of ruminant livestock, it is like removing 100 million cars off the road.
