There s concerns that the drinking water in Chippewa County contains an alarming level of nitrates, and now experts from around the state are brainstorming what to do about it.

Dubuque County to increase water-quality monitoring in wells

Dubuque County officials plan to more aggressively monitor water quality in wells next year. Staff members from the Center for Health Effects of Environmental Contamination appeared before the county Board of Supervisors on Monday about a project they are beginning to test 47 private wells for contamination in Dubuque, Delaware, Clayton and Allamakee counties. “Starting in the new year, we plan to conduct research in these four counties, partnering with the Iowa Geological Survey, the State Hygienic (Laboratory) and researchers here at the University of Iowa,” said CHEEC Associate Director Darren Thompson. “In addition, we hope to coordinate with county sanitarians in terms of identifying sampling sites and in sample collection.”
