On April 30, Marl took the oath of office for a city commission seat vacated by Rachel Lyles Smith when she stepped up to become mayor. Marl managed the campaign to oust Lyles Smith s mayoral predecessor Dan Holladay. Oregon City commissioners unanimously voted April 29 to appoint Marl to the open commission seat.
For the past three years, Marl has been a paid legislative intern for state Rep. Jack Zika, R-Redmond. Marl will graduate in May from Willamette University with a bachelor s degree after studying politics and communications.

In her first public forum the day after being sworn in as mayor, Lyles Smith on April 8 said new tourism programs supporting Oregon City restaurants while promoting nearby historic sites will help preserve the city s unique aspects as commissioners approve various options for denser residential development.

Oregon City Commissioner Rachel Lyles Smith will step up to become the city s mayor, according to unofficial March 9 election results showing her with a commanding lead.
Lyles Smith took 42% of the vote, 12 percentage points more than any of the four other candidates, in a special election with 27% voter turnout. By comparison, 52% of voters turned out for November s special recall election.
City commissioners were in a work session when the results came in, but they took a break from the meeting to congratulate Lyles Smith for her victory as mayor-elect.

Lyles Smith, the president of the Oregon City Commission, was already serving as interim mayor, after voters ejected Dan Holladay from office in a November special election, following a months-long campaign to recall him.
As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, the Clackamas County Elections Office had not finalized its tally, but near-final results indicated that Lyles Smith won by a landslide, with 42% of the votes. Leslie Wright Jr. placed second, with 29%. The three other candidates Alex Josephy, Damon Mabee and Phil Heppner trailed with 11% or less of the vote.
