President Joe Biden has come into office with the promise of restoring alliances and having the US reengage in global issues like climate, tax and fighting the covid-19 pandemic. At the top of the new administration’s agenda is also the approach to China. Where does this leave the EU and transatlantic relations? How central is the EU to the US and its interests in Europe? And how does the public in European countries view Biden’s America?
This webinar in partnership with Think Tank Europa centres on transatlantic relations under the Biden Administration and the role of the EU and its member states.
SCOTLAND is “committed to exploring closer links” with Nordic countries post-Brexit through a body set up to advance the region’s common interests, The National has been told. The development comes days after a former Danish government minister urged the country to form an alliance with its northern neighbours and to join the Nordic Council if it became independent, if it wanted to exert more influence in the area. Michael Russell, the Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution, Europe and External Affairs, held an online meeting with Paula Lehtomaki, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ secretary general in November last year and later wrote that closer ties made sense.
Ms Friis, who served as climate, energy and gender equality minister between 2009 and 2011 and is now the head of Think Tank EUROPA, told Dr Kirsty Hughes, director of the Scottish Centre on European Relations: From the public opinion point of view that would be popular. Scotland is also sometimes seen as a northern country, you could strike an alliance to that.
The Nordic Council is the body for formal inter-parliamentary cooperation among the Nordic countries such as Denmark, Finland and Norway.
Since the Brexit referendum, the Scottish Government have renewed their calls for independence and vowed to rejoin the EU if independence is won.
