OWN has released the trailer for Season 5 of Ava DuVernay’s drama series
Queen Sugar, which sees the Bordelon family and the community of St. Josephine come face-to-face with the Covid-19 pandemic.
When production on
Queen Sugar was forced to shut down in spring of 2020 due to the novel coronavirus, DuVernay chose to revamp the entire series storyline to address the pandemic as well as this past summer’s worldwide protests for racial justice that were sparked by the police killing of George Floyd. Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) continues her dispute with the Landry family as she attempts to use the system of local government to protect the community and the farmers who own land. Simultaneously, she tries to preserve ties with her son Micah (Nicholas Ashe) as he navigates his freshman year at Xavier University, an HBCU, and participates in the on-campus activism there.

As the Bordelons continue to take on the wealthy and powerful (read: privileged) Landry family from stealing the land of Black farmers, a deadly pandemic and wave of protests against police brutality and racism add to the fight they mount. And much of that wasn t even supposed to be part of season 5, which was already filming when COVID-19 started spreading and forced productions to shut down. Ava DuVernay’s drama “Queen Sugar” has been renewed for a sixth season ahead of its Season 5 premiere, OWN said Thursday.
While Season 6 is set to debut later this year, the first episode of “Queen Sugar’s” fifth season will air Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 8/7c on OWN.
The drama follows the Bordelon family, who are fighting to save their family farm to preserve their father’s legacy while navigating their own personal journeys. In Season 5, Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) remains thick in the battle with the Landry family as she uses the system of local government to protect the community and the farmers who own land, while coming to terms with her son Micah (Nicholas Ashe) as he navigates his freshman year at Xavier University, an HBCU. Nova (Rutina Wesley) launches her new website to support the community while mo
