Crowdfunding campaign seeks $50,000 to build Lydick Bog boardwalk in South Bend

SOUTH BEND — The nonprofit Shirley Heinze Land Trust is seeking $50,000 from the public in a crowdfunding campaign to build a boardwalk where hikers could finally view Lydick Bog. If the money is raised by March 31, the trust would win matching dollars from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s CreatINg Places program, for a total of $100,000. The state-dedicated Lydick Bog, on 178 acres that Shirley Heinze secured in 2015, now offers a 1.4-mile dirt hiking trail that loops through woods, coming near the actual bog but without a clear view of it. The low-oxygen, acidic bog with carnivorous plants is a relatively rare wetland habitat in northern Indiana; there are just a handful in the Michiana area.
