William Mathews Estabrook

William Mathews Estabrook passed away on Dec. 7 at the age of 88 in Davis. He was a longtime resident of Davis, having lived here since 1965.
He was born in Huntington, N.Y., to the late Robert William and Florence Eva (Pugsley) Estabrook; he was the second of four children.
Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany where he worked as a cryptanalyst. His stay in Germany led to a lifelong love of the German language and literature.
After his discharge from military service, he began his studies at Hofstra University under the GI bill. In 1959, he graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in German Literature. A week after graduation, Bill married fellow Hofstra student, Marina (Eberstein).
