to the plant, and is hoping to evacuate more civilians today. joining us now live, from lviv ukraine, nbc s jay gray. jay, has the u.n. evacuation convoy reached the steel plant in mariupol? yes, they have, and the good news is, at this point, the humanitarian corridor there is holding and they re able to move civilians out of the region and out of that steel plant specifically. hundreds, we are told, at this point, escaping the violence that has been so intense as you described, around the clock there, the last several days. we know at this point that that steel plant is not only a barricade for ukrainian soldiers, and marine, but also about two to 300 civilians who are there, seeking safety, and 30 of those children. and they continue to move out. but the u.n. warns that these humanitarian corridors have fallen apart quickly, in the past. so there s a lot of concern that
for that. on the ground in ukraine, fierce fighting is raging on in that steel plant in mariupol. as russian forces mounted a final push to take the last bastion of resistance in a devastated city. the ukrainian commander said yesterday that quote heavy blood fighting is taking place inside the factory. and this drone video that you re watching shared by ukraine s far right azov regiment shows thick smoke and multiple explosions at the complex. nbc news has not been able to independently verify when this video was shot. this is an adviser to ukraine s internal affairs ministry alleges the russians breached the compound after a former worker knew the layout and the russian shelling is nonstop adding quote, just imagine the hell for the children, and despite relentless attack, the ukrainian fighters have refused to surrender. meanwhile the u.s. says an evacuation convoy is on its way
