WASHINGTON, D.C. – After filing the bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition Act last week, which combines his Endless Frontiers Act, other bipartisan competitiveness bills, and $52 billion in emergency supplemental appropriations to implement the semiconductor-related manufacturing and R&D programs authorized in last year’s National Defense Authorization Act and a program to support legacy chip production that is essential to the auto industry, the military, and other critical industries, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. The Malta Town Board is considering a zoning amendment that would allow for the construction of 3.5 million square feet of “last-mile” warehouse/distribution space in the Luther Forest Technology Campus very near GlobalFoundries Fab 8. The proposal should be rejected.
In the mid-2000s, in support of the Comprehensive Master Plan, the town of Malta heavily marketed the campus to Intel and others in the semi industry. Ultimately, the state and town were successful in persuading Advanced Micro Devices to locate here. MALTA Globalfoundries is relocating its headquarters to Malta, the site of Fab 8, the company’s most advanced semiconductor manufacturing facility.
GF has invested more than $15 billion in its Fab 8 facility over the last decade to support innovation and manufacturing capacity. In 2021, the company is doubling its planned investment to expand global capacity, with $500 million targeted for Malta alone.
“This is a huge shot in the arm for our Capital Region economy,” U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer explained during an event held April 26, announcing the company’s plans to relocate its headquarters.
