Zambia : Lusaka decongestion project elates PS

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elias Kamanga is impressed with the US$ 289 million road expansion works intended to decongest traffic in the capital city. Mr. Kamanga said the over 120 kilometres road project will reduce traffic congestion in Lusaka city and boost economic development. He said the decongestion project is expected to be completed in June 2021 adding that most of the works have been done already. “The remaining works are the flyover bridge at Long acres and the other one between Cairo and Independence Avenue, ultimately we expect this project to be done by the end of June,” Mr. Kamanga explained. He noted that the 120.7 kilometres capital project is aimed at addressing the challenges of congestion and enhancing the economic development of the province.

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elias Kamanga has directed all school managers in Lusaka to send away teachers who do not mask up as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19 among institutions of learning. Mr Kamanga says failure by teachers to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols is a sign of indiscipline which he said will not be tolerated in the Province. Mr Kamanga who today, sent away a teacher who was found unmasked in the staffroom at Bayuni School when he inspected schools in Chilanga district, said teachers should set an example to learners by adhering to health guidelines to curtail the spread of the disease whose second wave has seen increased new cases and deaths.

Zambia : Church, Funeral gatherings must be restricted

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elias Kamanga is concerned that churches and funerals have continued to be super-spreaders of covid-19 and has called for restricting to such public gatherings. Mr. Kamanga notes that the death of a number of the clergy is evidence that the disease is being spread in places of worship saying more needs to be done to ensure adherence to health guidelines. Speaking during a virtual covid-19 multi-sectoral committee meeting yesterday, Mr. Kamanga noted that people have continued to gather in large numbers in churches and funerals. “This is the case even when the deceased is reported to have died from covid 19, people will be at funerals in large numbers disregarding the health guidelines,” he said.

Zambia : Kamanga expresses concern over poor health services civil servants are receiving from NHIMA

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Elias Kamanga has expressed concern over the poor health services that civil servants have been receiving from the National Health Insurance Management (NHIMA). Mr Kamanga noted that his office had lately received concerns from civil servants on the mismanagement of NHIMA saying a lasting solution needs to be found for the statute body to improve on the service delivery. “A follow-up on NHIMA’s poor service delivery will be made and feedback will be given in due course,“he said. The Provincial Permanent Secretary highlighted this concern during the Provincial Development Coordinating Committee (PDCC) 4th Quarter Report meeting which was held virtually.
