Is Sierra Leone richly poor or poorly rich?

Abdulai Mansaray: Sierra Leone Telegraph: 06 March 2021: Sierra Leone has always enjoyed the paradoxical label of being one of the richest poor countries in Africa.  Our country is regarded as rich and well known for its vast endowment in minerals –  diamonds, rutile, bauxite, gold, iron ore, limonite, platinum, chromite, coltan, tantalite, columbite and zircon, as well as promising petroleum potential. With our wonderful climate and large swathes of arable land, we used to boast about products like rice, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, and in the recent past, piassava. With such resources for a population averaging seven million at best of times, what is our excuse for being such a poor nation?

Less than 20pct of homes insured in Romania 44 years after major earthquake

Sursa foto: ziarulevenimentul.ro Less than 20% of all homes in Romania were insured in 2020 against certain risks, and more than half of Romanians (54%) say they are worried about the danger of an earthquake, according to a survey commissioned by National Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies in Romania (UNSAR) and conducted in 2020 by the Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy (IRES). UNSAR data submitted to AGERPRES on Thursday mark 44 years since a 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit Romania on March 4, 1977 leaving a tragic toll behind both in human casualties and social and economic destruction, including 1,600 human fatalities and 35,000 destroyed properties. In Romania, the share of housing covered by an insurance policy is still low, with just less than 20% of them being protected, despite an increase by three percentage points, in 2020 from 2019, of the stated interest of Romanians in housing and property insurance.

Time to solve the Sierra Leone Mining Company issue once and for ( )

Time to resolve the Sierra Leone Mining Company issue once and for all  19 February 2021 at 01:13 |  By Gibril Koroma, Editor and Publisher, Toronto, Canada The impasse between the Sierra Leone Mining company which is interested in the iron ore at the Marampa mines in Lunsar, north of Sierra Leone, and the Sierra Leone government has dragged on for too long. I think it’s high time a mediator respected by both parties intervenes. SLMC has invested a lot money in equipment and other expenses in Marampa and will find it very difficult to just walk away. They are now using the tactic of international litigation to put pressure on the Sierra Leone government to reconsider the cancellation of their horrible mining agreement signed during the reign of the former APC administration, an administration known for very bad mining deals and agreements. The Sierra Leone government wants to review the agreement and wants a better deal while SLMC wants to stick to the agreement unt
