I didn t expect it to hit so soon. I m thrilled and just over the moon. These past weeks have shown the absolute necessity of a place like Lunar Cafe in York - which is open for everyone! Having a dedicated safe space for LGBTQIA+ folk guarantees a wonderful environment that accepts, supports and empowers those who are still targeted around the world (even in our beautiful city of York). Hitting this target also means that we can start somewhere and build up over time in order to hold small wedding ceremonies, accommodate LGBT+ choirs and have better accessibility for the disabled members of the community.
Lunar Café s Nelli Mooney A CROWDFUNDER for York s first LGBT+ café has reached the halfway mark of its £5,000 start up fund target. 25-year-old Nelli Mooney, the non-binary interdisciplinary artist and art director behind Lunar Café , wants to create a safe sanctuary full of rainbow cakes and coffee as well as a specialist salon. Earlier this month Nelli told how people had already expressed their wish to hold small wedding ceremonies in the space, describing the concept as something unexpected, unusual and lots of fun . Now Nelli has found the café s in-house hairdresser who will be making trans customers feel like their most authentic selves .

Nelli, pictured centre, hopes to launch York s first LGBT+ cafe THE first LGBT+ café could be opening up in York as soon as 2022 as a York artist starts to turn their dream into reality. Almost £1,000 has been raised in less than a week by those who want to see Nelli Mooney, a 25-year old Finnish born non-binary interdisciplinary artist and art director, bring their vision of Lunar Café to life. With plans for rainbow cakes, coffee supplied by Abstract Coffee Roasters, support groups and a shop stocking LGBT+ merch, Nelli wants to bring more representation to the high streets of a city known for its progressive history.
