fairley minor from what we ve been able to see from getting to the airport in san antonio here to corpus christi downed signed we ve seen some larger branches. definitely one of those areas where you need your flashlight when you walk around. we drove down from san antonio. we landed about midnight last night into 55 knot headwinds. so we were coming right into some of those gusts that we saw on the back side of this storm. and we drove down in one of the lulls in between two bands of really heavy rain. it s the eastern side of the storm that gets the brunt of it and that is certainly what we ve been seeing. that s where we ve already had reports of winds gusting up to 132 miles per hour. that was the first landfall of this category 4 hurricane. the second landfall was in rockport where we have seen devastating damage as that eye wall moved through or just near the city of rockport. we ve also already picked up more than 16 inches of rain in
in the last several minutes. reporter: jim, as we have seen throughout the day, these bands of rain and wind have come. there will be lulls. while we are experiencing lulls in the rain, there are no more lulls in the sustained winds we re experiencing here. one of the things incredibly striking to me, it is hard to make out on the video, on the picture we re showing you here, when you look out into the gulf of mexico here, beyond those initial white caps out there, way out in the distance, you can see other white caps erupting out of the water. can t tell you how just stark that looks. it is like the power and the furry of the water that has churned up out there in the gulf of mexico is extremely powerful. for that to be visible really says something about how treacherous the conditions are out there in the water. when you look up in these winds, the low level clouds here, jim, really stands out just how quickly they re being pushed over top of us here and these
