When Tomas Trucha arrived at the Dolicek Stadium in Prague for Bohemians’ match against Banik Ostrava, the assistant coach knew that his job was on the line.
Bohemians were on a barren run having picked up five points from a possible 24 in their previous eight league games. Trucha and the club’s manager Roman Pivarnik were aware of the extreme pressure they were under to get a result.
Step forward Patrik Schick.
“Our form was terrible, we were struggling to get points on the table and we were pretty much on the verge of getting sacked,” Trucha tells
The Athletic. “Being in a situation like that was so hard and upsetting at times. But there was one game we needed to win and Patrik scored two goals and we thought, ‘Hallelujah, he has arrived. We’ll still be employed!’”

Lennon came under fire when Celtic were bounced out of the Champions League in August after Tokmac Nguen snatched a breakaway goal against the run of play in the 74th minute in the one-legged tie. The manager was unimpressed by some of his players and said: “I am angry, frustrated, disappointed. There are some players who may want to leave. They have made inroads into that in the last six months or so. If they are making waves to leave the club they are obviously not committed. We want players committed to the club.”

In detail: Neil Lennon s disaster Celtic season from dismal results to explosive Dubai presser and flop signings Neil Lennon s status as a Celtic great was secured years ago. A manager and player for the club over a span of 13 years, the Northern Irishman won everything there was to realistically win including trebles as both a footballer and a coach. This season, of course, has been an unmitigated disaster and fans have rightfully been disappointed and upset that their 10 in a row hopes were dashed by the combination of a strong Rangers and an, at times, woeful Celtic side.
Our view: Three players West Ham can sign to be their next Tomas Soucek
West Ham United have enjoyed great success in the Czech market in 2020, and who can rule out another move in 2021?
The Hammers raided Slavia Prague to sign Tomas Soucek in January of this year, first landing him on loan before turning the move permanent.
Soucek now has six goals in just 26 games for West Ham, and his strong performances ultimately resulted in West Ham dipping back into the Czech market for right back Vladimir Coufal.
Coufal has become a fan favourite at the London Stadium too, turning in superb displays that may just tempt West Ham into the Czech market yet again in January or next summer.
