Women s Weekend Watch: 5 Dark Horses to Keep an Eye On

Friday April 23rd, 2021 1:30pm (Photo Courtesy: Glen Mitchell, StanfordPhoto.com)  No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Northwestern have played a cut above the rest of the field this year. The rest of Division I lacrosse is up for grabs, with multiple teams in the sport’s traditional powerhouse conferences, the ACC and Big Ten, jockeying for positioning in the standings.  Last week, Boston College topped a Notre Dame team that took UNC to the brink. The Eagles will close the season at Syracuse in what could be the matchup of the weekend. In the Big Ten, Rutgers upset Maryland, and Johns Hopkins topped Penn State.

Rutgers, Denver Join Nike / US Lacrosse Division I Women s Top 20

Mon Apr 19 2021 | Kenny DeJohn | College PHOTO BY JOHN STROHSACKER Taralyn Naslonski and Rutgers are streaking as the postseason approaches. While some teams already finished with their abbreviated spring schedules, others are approaching the finish line and there might not be another team sprinting toward the finish quite like Boston College. Outside of an understandable hiccup against North Carolina on March 6, the Eagles have been nearly untouchable. They proved that again this past weekend by hosting Notre Dame and beating the Irish handily twice. Neither game was particularly close, as the Eagles offense continually dissected a Notre Dame defense that was coming off a game in which it allowed just 11 goals to UNC.

Dragons Rising: Drexel Eyeing History in 2021

Hannah Wszalek was the one who recruited her out of nearby Central Bucks South. But it didn’t take long for those fears to melt away. “Jill, Maddie [Lesher] and Kelsey [Donnelly] are so amazing and fit into our group so well,” said Dietzel, now in her fifth year with Drexel. “Once we got to know them, it was the perfect fit, and it’s been so much fun, especially in this third year.”

Don’t even bother trying to make predictions in the Big Ten anymore. In the latest example how every team other than Northwestern is susceptible to an upset, unranked Johns Hopkins took down No. 19 Penn State 13-10 Wednesday evening at Homewood Field. After Kristin O’Neill tied the score at 4 with 6:49 left in the first half, Hopkins scored the next five goals to take a 9-4 lead. Mackenzie Heldberg made the score 13-7 later in the game, and although Maria Auth scored the contest’s final three goals, Penn State could not complete a late comeback attempt.
