Montreal-Toronto news war heats up with Canadians-Leafs playoff wager

Postmedia senior VP and Gazette editor-in-chief Lucinda Chodan makes a friendly bet with Toronto Sun editor-in-chief Adrienne Batra.
It won’t just be mayors, co-workers and drinking buddies laying down wagers on the Canadiens-Maple Leafs NHL playoff series, which begins in Toronto on Thursday.

Batra has wagered a case of Steam Whistle beer that her hometown heroes will prevail over their Highway 401 rivals in Montreal.
“This is going to be the Leafs’ year, pandemic or not,” Batra said. “We’re so confident that the Habs will be on the golf course next week we’re betting that case of beer. Montreal will be on ice, but not in the way they hoped.”

Health reporter Aaron Derfel was named the Grand Prize winner at the awards gala of the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec.
It’s the first time since 1993 that a journalist from the Montreal Gazette has won that particular prize.

“The award demonstrates how significant Aaron’s coverage of the pandemic has been,” said Lucinda Chodan, editor in chief of the Gazette. “His story about Résidence Herron was the first indication we had of the ravages of COVID-19 on our seniors’ care network. It was a great example of journalism that makes a difference.”

The Montreal Gazette’s Aaron Derfel has been nominated for yet another award for his investigation into the disaster at the Herron long-term care centre last year.
The Canadian Association of Journalists nominated Derfel for its annual awards that recognize the best in Canadian journalism, in the Written News category.

Derfel’s work has already been nominated by the Fédération professionnelle des journalistes du Québec for its Judith-Jasmin Prize. It’s also up for a National Newspaper Award, a CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism and a Michener Award.

Tedd Church, whose keen eye and whimsical nature would earn him two National Newspaper Awards in a 38-year career with the Montreal Gazette, has died. He was 81.
Church passed away at the Verdun Hospital on Wednesday morning from complications related to Parkinson’s disease. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, Church’s three children and his wife of 60 years were able to visit him in the weeks before he died.
