Man Arrested For Arson, Vehicle Theft In Luce County

9 & 10 News June 28, 2021 The Luce County Sheriff’s Department says a man has been arrested following a structure fire and car theft. Deputies say on Wednesday, June 23, they received reports of a fire at a home on County Road 438. Once there, deputies found flames coming from the back side of the home. The homeowner told deputies that the house was on fire when they returned from a trip, and said they were also missing their Chevy Monte Carlo. Additionally, the homeowner told deputies they had a suspect in mind for the incident. Deputies say during an investigation, Carl Verrett was arrested in Mackinac County with the Monte Carlo.

State Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Luce County June 9, 2021 The Michigan State Police are now investigating an officer-involved shooting incident that took place in Luce County. The Luce County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy was responding to a breaking and entering call in Newberry, when the deputy came across a suspicious car. The deputy says the driver would not provide proper identification and appeared to be under the influence. When the driver then tried to reach into his pocket, the deputy attempted to stop him and was punched in the face. The driver drove off while the deputy was still partially in the car and was dragged for a short distance.

Missing fisherman located in Luce County

NEWBERRY, MI    An angler who went missing in Luce County Monday has been found in good condition. The 64-year-old man from Free Soil, Michigan failed to meet up with his fishing partner and was reported missing around 8 p.m. The Luce County Sheriff’s Office established an incident command post near the intersection of County Road 421 and the Tahquamenon River. DNR Conservation Officers kayaked the river until 1 a.m. Tuesday, then suspended the search. At 7:30 a.m. sheriff’s deputies and Border Patrol agents joined the river search. A Michigan State Police helicopter arrived at 1 p.m. and within 20 minutes located the man. It took the conservation officers 45 minutes to reach the missing man, who was dehydrated but otherwise in good condition.
